Daisy Swan has been a certified teacher with MARC since 2012 and has been regularly teaching MAPS I and II classes since then.

Mindful Awareness Practices I (MAPs I): Introduction to Mindfulness: Mindfulness Practices for Daily Living

UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center has developed this six-week course as an excellent introduction to mindfulness. Through this class you’ll gain insight into the basics of mindfulness, learn how to develop a regular mindfulness meditation practice, and strategies for how to incorporate mindfulness into your daily life. Experienced practitioners will also find this a supportive class in which to revitalize their practice.

What we’ll cover in the class:

  • An overview of mindfulness and how we define and ‘practice’ this
  • Mindfulness of the body
  • Obstacles we all experience to mindfulness
  • How mindful awareness can help with physical pain
  • How to work with difficult emotions that arise
  • Cultivation of positive emotions
  • Working with difficult thoughts
  • Communicating mindfully

Participants will receive home-practice assignments to begin to establish a regular mindfulness routine. Starting at five minutes a day and working up to 20 minutes daily by the end of the course, previous participants have cited this part of the class as one of the most helpful to weave their meditation practice into their lives.
