Calm Communication: Skillful Strategies for Stressful Social Situations
Guest Contributor for My L.A. Lifestyle
We live in a noisy world; one that is often overwhelming for even the toughest of us. For many introverts, the noise of life and the incessant social situations in which we find ourselves can be mind-numbing and exhausting.

I’ve been studying the ‘quieter’ folks of the world for years. I grew up in a family of introverts, married a couple, and am raising an introverted son. I’ve also worked with hundreds of introverted clients who have struggled to stretch into a larger world, to connect with others who could help them attain their next opportunity. So when a former client contacted me to see if I’d be interested in offering a class for people like her – someone who has achieved a lot, but who finds the social demands of her work daunting – I happily said “yes”.
All of us, quiet or rambunctious, wrestle with our fears of saying or doing the wrong thing. Extraverts often feel the need to talk things through with others, before they settle on what they really think, or know what they want to say. They may feel self-doubt, but they’ll push through that in order to connect verbally. They love to process verbally. Speaking before knowing is typical for the extravert.
Introverts, however, may have a tendency to undermine themselves with negative internal ‘self talk’ that creates self-consciousness and anxiety. And even if they aren’t shy – as in, uncomfortable talking with others – people may associate an introvert’s quiet demeanor as aloof or withdrawn, when they really DO want to be connecting and socially available.
Starting on June 20, at 7:00 PM, I’ll be leading “Calm Communication”, a six-week program that addresses the strengths and gifts of introverts. We’re holding this program at InsightLA, the lovely mindfulness meditation center in Santa Monica. This six-week class will provide a compassionate container in which to learn techniques to recognize, and quell, the discomfort of self-judgment that often arises in social and work situations requiring you to show up with a bigger presence and voice. I’ve helped many clients feel more grounded and able to speak up, and calm down, so that they feel more verbally effective while being themselves.

As a practitioner and teacher of mindfulness meditation, I know that this practice serves us to tune in and hear ourselves; it’s the perfect antidote to the often annoying inner critic who chatters away when we’d rather be giving voice to something valuable. This non-judgmental and safe container of a class will provide the opportunity for each person to work at their own pace, and to try out new behaviors as appropriate for them.
Wouldn’t it be a relief to approach a new social situation with confidence, and the knowledge that the unshakeable you can be seen contributing the gifts that you know you have to offer? Believe in yourself to light the spark of excitement
“There is no scientific answer for success. You can’t define it. You’ve simply got to live it and do it.” Anita Roddick, Founder, The Body Shop
Lately, when I first open my eyes in the morning, I remember what day it is, and do a quick mental scan of what I have planned. Then, as I’m enjoying those final moments with my pillow and quilt, I feel the simultaneous pull of excitement to enter my day.
by Daisy Swan
Taking that action to step into the day isn’t always easy; it doesn’t always seem so inviting that we leap into it with a burning desire to make something of it. I’ve had mornings when, lacking in energy, I didn’t believe the rest of my day was going to make much of a difference for me or anyone else. We’ve all had those mornings that, if we’re not conscious, can snowball into days of simply going through the motions. Those are lousy days. When I think back on them, I reflect on moments that had the potential to ignite in me a little spark to act; to start or finish something that may have eventuated into an accomplishment. This realization is important – it’s the identification of that almost imperceptible thought-moment of, “What if?” and doing something with it. Careers, companies, books, products, services, websites, and designs are borne out of moments like this.
When we don’t love our work, it’s likely we see a dull opaque blur in front of us. Just as dust settling on a wet windshield blocks our ability to see anything in sharp focus, we may not be able to identify what we are longing to sink our teeth into in order to feel satisfied. We may experience a hollow feeling that we’re missing what everyone else has (comparison deepens the sense of lack), creating an even deeper trough to dig ourselves out of. This stagnant place offers a most important message: By paying attention and taking action to gain back our belief, our trust, and our confidence, we have the ability to do something that matters. It’s this belief in our selves, or something beyond the self, that can light the spark.
The mystery is that we don’t always know what to do to jumpstart ourselves when we have hit that dark, dank place. Taking a step, even a little one, and committing to something challenging, in a fun and even eccentric way, can re-engage us. It could mean picking up a hobby from years ago, or taking a new interest in people who you had lost touch with. Perhaps offering to help someone you never would have thought to talk to before, or choosing to start a project you’ve put off for far too long. The act of “doing” makes the difference. Human resilience is amazing – we really are all wired to bounce back, and action brings us back to life. Even if we aren’t quite clear on what our purpose is, when we take one step and then a second, we’re moving towards it. A shift in perspective or curiosity can make all the difference.
Trust in the knowledge that in waking up with a sense of excitement for the day ahead, all it takes is a moment of thought and a subsequent action to effect a change. All of sudden it is happening. It found us, or we found it. It doesn’t matter because we’re doing it.

Stretching That Creativity Muscle
Guest Contributor for My L.A. Lifestyle
Angelenos are a creative bunch, on the whole. We tend to be people who are a little daring — hard workers who like to play hard, too. And yet, I hear from clients all the time that they would like to have more creativity in their lives. Many of these people are suffering from an abundance of familiarity. Stretching ourselves to experience something new, creative, and visually beautiful…now that can really expand our being.

I recently stretched myself by attending my first glass blowing class at Revolution Glass in El Segundo. I love the medium of glass and have a large collection of glass paperweights, so I was thrilled when I was given this class as a gift. Josh Gelfand, who owns, teaches, and creates at Revolution Glass, offers classes in glass blowing as well as studio time for those who already work the craft.

With so much buzzing around us all the time, it’s easy to think we can keep on top of the important stuff by staying plugged in to our phone, laptop or device of choice. But sometimes, we need to inject an extra dose of energy and inspiration, via simple human interaction.

In L.A. we have traffic, right? So if we’re going to head out of our neighborhood it better be worth it, yes? I’ve come to feel that one of my most favorite, and worthwhile, treks in L.A. is when I get up early and head downtown to the beautiful and inspiring Gensler building, to see and hear a fantastic speaker hosted by Ted Habte-Gabr and Live Talks LA Business Forum. Ted has been producing these speaker events for a while now, and he’s doing a great job of hosting people who are smart, forward thinking and entertaining, too. I recently made the drive downtown to see one of my favorite authors, Daniel Pink, who just released his fourth book “To Sell Is Human”. Yes, I could have just watched the video of his talk, but I was really happy I could say hello and thank Mr. Pink for his books – in person.
I was also terrifically inspired, months ago, by speaker and author Chris Anderson, who wrote the fascinating book “Makers: The New Industrial Revolution”. Mr. Anderson was being interviewed by the amazingly accomplished, yet down-to-earth, mover and shaker, Krisztina “Z” Holly from USC’s Stevens Center for Innovation.
I learned about the 3D printing craze, and about the growing need for group garage space for the growing ranks of DIYers (“Do It Yourself”, for those not in the know) who are busy getting their hands dirty inventing the fab things we can invest in, on Kickstarter.
Ted Habte-Gabr also produces evening programs; you can learn more about them at Live Talks Los Angeles. I had the pleasure of seeing Penn Jillette speak and, well, rant, a few months ago. It was a fun night out and closer to my neck of the woods, in Santa Monica. We owe a nod of thanks to Ted for bringing good, clean educational fun to L.A., and making it easy to be around people who like that sort of thing. Almost makes me feel like I’m back in New York City…
What We Want
Guest Contributor for My L.A. Lifestyle
Recent studies show that more than half of all employees are looking forward to leaving their jobs once the economy gets better. But, what would they be leaving for? What would you be leaving for?
Overall, what most people want is a way to make meaningful progress in their work. They want to feel like their work matters. Given that we want these changes, and that the better employment picture we’d hoped for may still be limping along for a while longer, what can we do to keep our own happiness, satisfaction and spirit up, in the face of this often WAY frustrating scenario?
As a career coach, I see how anxiety is ratcheting up, and how learning various techniques and practices that help with all of this anxiety can truly positively affect my clients. Mindfulness, and the stress-managing principles of this approach, is getting a lot of press these days, and the science about the brain and mindfulness proves that this stuff works. There are many ways to include mindfulness in our daily lives…it’s not just about sitting quietly or going to yoga classes.
That’s why I, and a group of outstanding professionals, am hosting the practically-oriented half-day workshop Creating a Mindful Life, on February 2nd, at my office in Marina Del Rey.
Participants will learn:
• Energy-generating and disease-fighting actions that can be done simply and daily, that will shore up reserves and boost emotional and physical immunity…crucial during these winter flu months.
• Personal narrative strategies that turn frustration and defeat into heroism and life affirmation; that build vital communication and connection with the people who mean the most to us at home and at work.
• New ways to approach career challenges to find strengths that can be put to work in new ways – both in a current job, and to transfer to new opportunities. Find new ways to break out of preconceived limiting beliefs, to see new options for now and for later.
• Techniques that really work to quiet the often negative mind chatter that robs us of peace of mind.
Advice For Picking A Gambling Career
Your dream job must be able to fulfill both of your spiritual and financial requirements. In others words, you must wake up eager to go to work each morning and not feel like you are doing it just because it gets the checks paid. Also, it must be rewarding enough moneywise so it enables you to enjoy the financial freedom you are looking for. A career path that might do just that is one in the field of gambling. Casinos and gambling or gaming halls are growing in number each year and if you already have passion for casinos, here are a few ideas to help you get started.
Decide What Interests You Most
Some people like to shuffle cards or throw the dice; others are more interested in the security wing of a casino. Whatever your cup of tea might be, think real hard and start doing some research. Find out the job requirements for each position you might be analyzing and be as specific as you can. Routine is an important factor within the majority of gambling facilities. The human brain will find repetition soothing to some point; you will feel comfortable with knowing exactly what you have to do every day and you will do it reaching the point of perfection. However, you are also likely to get bored at some point, and need something to challenge you. You might hence consider some jobs that are more suitable for you and less demanding. You can read the Europa Casino review on the Australia-casino.org site in case you need extra guidance concerning the activities you might find inside a casino. With a virtual casino dating back since 2003, things tend to get a lot easier. Downloading the casino is easy and flash no-download games are also available; the lobby area is the main center of focus, as this is the place where players go to choose the games they want to play. With 10/10 graphics and a huge 2,400 welcome bonus deal for newcomers who make their first deposit here, Europa Casino is a good place to get acquainted with the fascinating universe of casinos.
The Importance Of Staying Focused
It’s easy to get lost. All it takes is a few wrong steps and a complete lack of concentration and you will face situations you haven’t actually planned; you will also most likely have a hard time getting back on the right track and reaching your original goals. So it is essential to remain focused at all times no matter how many distractions might throw at you.
Tips To Staying Focused
Write down your absolute goal on top of a white piece of paper. Use a colored marker and big letters. Then add the smaller goals and milestones that will help you reach the big goals from the top. For each small goal, take your time and come up with the right strategies and ideas to get you there fast and easy. Find ways of compressing time-consuming tasks into smart solutions to the same problems. Use out of the box thinking and discover unique approaches that have never been tried before. Once you are done with your complete list, use an agenda to write down every new improvement idea you can think of. Your brain will have a much easier time coming up with better answers if you will have everything broken down into smaller chunks. Let us assume your main goal is to win a huge amount of money. You could try to play pokies online. For this, you will need to train and learn expert strategies to improve your game. Then practice and practice do some more learning. Look at the online pokies tutorials on the playpokisonline site – you will discover detailed explanations on the gambling odds, the winning rate for multi-line slots games, and learn ways to use these tutorials for your offline practice as well. Learn how to improve your chances of winning – practically seeing videos of the games played will help you better maintain your focus on reach your initial goal.
Overcoming Roadblocks In Life
Few people have it all figured out in life – from an early stage – and they keep on following their plan to achieve goal after goal. Bumps in the road are usually unpredictable and unavoidable – and these are the times plans get changed and redirected and the feeling of being overwhelmed by hardships turns into a roadblock. This is yet a normal stage of normal life than can be overcome – and we are here to lend you a hand. Some of the most common forms of therapy you could try at home are relaxation and meditation techniques.
How To Relax At Home
Run a hot bath, lit some candles and play some cooling music. Read a book that you find enjoyable or take on a new hobby such as knitting, restoring old books or broken furniture, knitting, or making jewelry out of colored beads. If you enjoy staying online a lot, you can play the Rainbow Riches game at games.ladbrokes.com – do it for free until you get the hang of it so you can avoid undesirable money loss and the frustration that comes along. Read the rules of the game – you will easily find them explained on the same Games page. All you need to do is pick the number of liens and size of stake you would like to wager with the help of the special ‘stake’ and ‘line’ + and – buttons. You can choose up to 20 lines and hit the corresponding ‘spin’ button when you are ready to get started. Use the autoplay option to see the fast paced version of the game by picking the desired number of autoplay rounds. The Road to Riches, Wishing Well and The Pots of Gold scatter bonus games are also part of the offer and the second you are ready to use real money wagers, you can use the real play option.

Enter 2013! Time to reboot.
Guest Contributor for My L.A. Lifestyle
As 2013 rounds into view, I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel – in fact, there’s lots of data that says we all are.
We’ve lived through several remarkable years that have stretched everyone in a myriad of ways. Finally, it looks like we may be emerging from the worst of the retracted job market. But this is still not the job market that it once was. Many people have had to change how they work, learn and retool, and many people have endured jobs that they’d rather have left, after co-workers were let go and work demands increased. Even if your work hasn’t changed, the pace of life has increased as emails, technologies, and choices flood our lives.

With increased responsibilities, loss, and overwhelm – and ultimately, stress – we tend to emotionally retract into a defensive posture. We can close down; our dreams may feel thwarted; our irritation level rises and burnout takes over.
Enter 2013! Time to reboot.
Finding a way back to an energized quality that sparks new possibilities and opportunities, can be tricky. Researcher and author Brené Brown has found that vulnerability is essential to creativity and innovation. But who really wants that?
Think about it. Does shutting down feel good? Or does feeling alive and fulfilled? What does it take, then, to bring something fresh into our lives and our work, which results in a new and reinvigorated vision? New tools are needed to bring that to fruition.

I, and a group of wonderful experts in wellness, mindful mental health and even relationships and parenting, will be leading “CREATING A MINDFUL LIFE”, a half-day interactive workshop, on Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 9 AM – 1 PM, in a Los Angeles location TBA. This workshop will address new and effective ways to start 2013 off right, so that you too, can live a balanced and fulfilling life. We’ll share ways to:
- – Create a healthy narrative and vision to change your story, and open yourself up to new work and life opportunities
- – Nurture wellness for disease prevention and increase life force to overcome stress
- – Cultivate mindful practices to create connected and compassionate relationships at home and at work.

At a barbecue the other night, a new acquaintance was telling me that she had the hardest time staying motivated to do her job. She’s a single mom raising two teenagers, so she needs her steady income. But to feed her spirit, she has a robust side-business teaching children to play instruments. Essentially, she’s working two jobs. The job that has her feeling like she’s really engaged, where she really loses herself in the activity of her work? Teaching music. Is it exhausting to do this and her regular job? Yes. But in an energized, fulfilling way that comes with knowing she’s made a difference.
